The Guitar Hero 'bike' video is featured in this, which was done by agency Droga5 as a viral video. There's a running debate over authenticity, as not only the origins of the video become a topic, but also seeding practices are now commonly known. That awareness is often reflected in comments like the one that appeared on the GH vid: "What's up, viral marketing douchebags?"

This was bound to happen. Throw in mobile tech for flash mobs, and a highly identifiable camera truck, and you have Google StreetView stunts. I could see this being used for marketing purposes in a rather humorous way, although the big question is how many people would ever see it. I'm guessing there isn't a lot of StreetView traffic. However, could be good for PR stunts.

2008 Buzz Awards
Not your typical campaigns, these are good examples of distinct approaches to marketing. I only wish they included slides or case studies, as its pretty difficult to ascertain what these were about at the consumer level.

Garfield: Why Aren't More Advertisers Using Widgets? - Advertising Age - News
Rather extensive article of Widget uses and case studies. I agree in general, although find the big challenge the limited 'brain space' for widgets for any given consumer. Interesting point towards the end, though, about the movement away from large destination sites to more nimble solutions. In this case, the widget.

OfficeMax Spurns 'Elf' Shops
A good article on how tough this business can be, irregardless of success. One note regarding how Office Max is evaluating the 'Elf' series: OfficeMax plans to measure the success of this year's promotion based on brand metrics. Last year, according to the company, 40 percent of those who created elves associated the experience with OfficeMax. Over 30 percent said it made them more likely to shop there.

Can Social Networks Predict What You'll Buy? - Advertising Age - Digital
Interesting, but not always explicit, overview of new targeting trends. They profile a number of companies, using different tactics to build their list of connected consumers. Another is distributing analytics tech to various communities, trying to link them together. That sounds interesting, but sites will have a limit to how many such technologies they'll support.

Google News posts old article about United bankruptcy and stock plummets
Odd story about a 2002 article in the NY Times' online archives that reported United Airline's bankruptcy filing. The Tribune states a single visit pushed the article into Google's automated search agent, which then pushed it to Google News, where it spread like wild fire. The result? UALs stock plunged about 75% in 15 minutes.
There's an odd little spat going on between Google and the NY Times about responsibility. What I don't get is how a single visit pushed the article into Google News.
Sounds like an SEO manager's wet dream.
