A good review of the iPhone app on Mashable. This is probably one of the most logical apps you could want, as especially among young people, a lot of movie-going decisions are out-of-home. Sounds like they did a great job, too.

The Goods May Be Virtual, but the Profit Is Real - NYTimes.com
Recently, I've posted a number of articles on this trend, and yet more reinforcement keeps popping up. This is a look at gaming, particularly social gaming. While the article doesn't delve into it's counterpart, console gaming, it's not hard to connect the dots. Currently console gaming companies spending 100s of millions to launch a title, selling them at a high cost -- often $40 or more. And like the movie industry, they lose money on most of their productions, making it back on a few hits.

New game for the film Sherlock. The answer is on Facebook, Mr Watson
Beautiful production on this, although it's not real clear how the game play works from the intro. Looks like they were focused on selling the film, and having that lead you into the game play.

Surprise hit 'Paranormal Activity' scares money out of moviegoers
Perhaps the movie story of the year. Taking a page from "Blair Witch Project", this DIY scarefest was made for $11,000, according to this article, and has already pulled in $7m. Of course, this movie is getting great reviews, which is certainly at the core of its success. The tactic to market this was a video showing audience members actually viewing the movie, and also a grass-roots campaign, by Paramount, to get 1,000,000 on MeetUp to 'demand' the movie in their local theater. They hit the mark, which seemed to generated a lot of press.

Paranormal Activity Tries to Ride Social Media Buzz to Wide Release
If the movie gets 1,000,000 people to demand to see it, then Paramount will do a wide-release for the movie. For a region to qualify, it has to get 100 people within a 100 mile radius. You 'demand' the movie on Eventful, who's currently running a number of promotions.

Is Fantasy Football The Best Marketing Program Ever?
From the sounds of it, Fantasy Football was drummed up by someone in the NFL, or at least from the Oakland Raiders organization. If so, that makes it quite a remarkable mix of experiential marketing, social media, user generated content, and word of mouth marketing. It's been a while since I've read the numbers, but last I hear the number of players was remarkable.

Moviegoers Protest 'The Cove'
Good story about how effective campaigns need the right media and the right tech at the right time. Additionally, I like the contrarian approach of using mobile during a movie as part of the consumer-action campaign. Another sign that rules are only suggestions, and a powerful emotional driver trumps all.

IKEA Heights [VIDEO]
This was apparently shot inside an IKEA, during open hours. I found it really funny, but of course a lot of the humor is knowing the shooting is going on amongst the mostly oblivious but sometimes curious other shoppers. Probably nothing they could now sell to IKEA, as I'm sure the lawyers would have a field day. But a good reel piece of everyone involved.
