Razorfish issues last rites for Web 2.0 - iMediaConnection.com
This is more of a plug for Razorfish, but I like the CEO's quote --- I'd say we are already operating in a 3.0 world. "Web 3.0 will be much more focused on business solutions and less on marketing communications," he says. "We're at a point now where you take all of these tools -- websites, search, mobile, targeted ads -- and put them together in an integrated fashion."

Tech firms turn to social media to reach consumers
Not that surprising, since tech firms have always been some of the earlier companies to leverage new media. Because new media people are naturally early adopters of technology, and tend to share their views on virtually everything, this makes a lot of sense.

Glam launches GlamApps, a sort of Facebook for advertisers VentureBeat
Glam Media has always impressed me with their cutting edge ideas for content aggregation and ad sales. This is their new marketing widget platform for advertisers. They're partnering with a long list of widget tech providers. Here's an example of it's customization: if VentureBeat wanted to offer a widget of its full news stories to the New York Times, we could do so using one widget. VentureBeat could then use a second widget to offer its news content in a different way (perhaps just the first two paragraphs) to three or four other top publishers.

OfficeMax Spurns 'Elf' Shops
A good article on how tough this business can be, irregardless of success. One note regarding how Office Max is evaluating the 'Elf' series: OfficeMax plans to measure the success of this year's promotion based on brand metrics. Last year, according to the company, 40 percent of those who created elves associated the experience with OfficeMax. Over 30 percent said it made them more likely to shop there.

Dr Pepper signs video gamer to endorsement deal
It's perhaps only surprising that this didn't happen long ago. Show me the money? 3 year $250k deal. Not exactly 'Manning dollars', but it affords him the 15 hours a day he puts into gaming.

Xbox.com | New Xbox Experience
Just in time for the holidays. A few of the many features include: * Customized animated avatars that become your game face * Community-developed games * Lips, kind of a Guitar Hero for singers * You're in the Movies, which based on the description seems like a movie-making app in which you and your friend's avatars can create short films in the Xbox.

There is no guarantee that we will succeed every time, but the trying creates value in itself."

Can Social Networks Predict What You'll Buy? - Advertising Age - Digital
Interesting, but not always explicit, overview of new targeting trends. They profile a number of companies, using different tactics to build their list of connected consumers. One uses cookies and ad-serving data to determine interaction rates among people and find out who is close to whom. Another is distributing analytics tech to various communities, trying to link them together. That sounds interesting, but sites will have a limit to how many such technologies they'll support.
